Washtenaw County officials are urging drivers to exercise caution on U.S. 23 and other county roads due to icy road conditions caused by an ongoing ice storm warning, which is set to continue through Thursday.

Northfield Township Public Safety staff have reported multiple accidents along U.S. 23, and the Michigan Department of Transportation has reported three crashes on Wednesday, February 22, with the first one briefly blocking the right on westbound I-96 at Exit 147 to Spencer Road. The other two crashes occurred on northbound U.S. 23 at Exit 52 to Barker Road and Exit 45 to West M-14, blocking the left shoulder and right lane, respectively.

“We expect the road conditions, both primary and secondary, to continue getting icy,” the Northfield Township Public Safety department wrote on social media. Washtenaw County Road Commission spokesperson Tiffany Oliphant advised drivers to watch out for black ice and be cautious on bridges and overpasses as they are the first to freeze and become slick. Oliphant emphasized the importance of slowing down and paying attention to road conditions to prevent accidents.
